Quake Zone
Lately, I’ve been reading a lot in the news about
earthquakes. In fact, there was a major earthquake in Seattle, a city not
associated with this kind of disaster. Obviously, no one was prepared, and a lot
of damage resulted.
Even in places where earthquakes are common, I don’t see
how anyone could be prepared for it. One minute you’re doing your own thing,
and then suddenly, the world starts shaking all around you. I can only imagine
the terror of someone who as lived through such an event.
If you think about it, youth today live in a "quake
zone". There are major tremors happening all the time. Then suddenly, a
major event happens that changes your world.
Drugs, sex, peer pressure and violence are tremors that you
live with everyday. The temptation to compromise is so great. Unfortunately, you
never know when the tremor will turn out to be a big one.
The entertainment industry adds to the confusion by making
high-risk behavior seem cool. But sexual diseases aren’t cool; they cause
major hassles. High crime and violence among youth isn’t cool; it’s sad.
When you live in a quake zone, it’s important to have an
anchor. We must have something that won’t move when everything around us is
falling apart. The bible says that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today
and forever (Hebrews 13:8). In ot-
her
words, He doesn’t move. Nothing else can make that claim. Good looks will
eventually fade, popularity will go away, and pleasure will prove futile. But
Jesus Christ will be there always.
When you make Jesus Christ the Lord of your life, His Word
becomes your anchor. No matter what is going on around you, He is always there
for you. Jesus paid the death penalty for every wrong thing that you have done.
You couldn’t save yourself then, and you cannot now. He wants you to hold on
to Him.
Quake zones are not going to go away. You will always be
dealing with some problem in your life. You may be in the midst of a full-scale
quake right now, complete with aftershocks. Jesus wants to be your place of
safety. He is all you need to hold on to when your world is falling apart.
