Honor Your Parents

Our parents are the most important people in our lives. That's why God instructed us to honor them. That means we should give them great respect because it is the right thing to do. We should have a very high opinion of our parents, especially in the eyes of the public. In other words, our friends should all know that we respect and value the opinion of our parents.

It is normal, as we grow older to desire to make our own decisions. If we are not cautious, this can become a source of tension between our parents and us. But it should not be.

No matter how much we want freedom to make our own decisions, we still need to honor our parents. The best way to earn freedom and trust from parent is by honoring and respecting them, not by yelling and fussing. You may "have it your way" at McDonald's, but at home, it is not that easy. If all I had to do were yell and scream to get what I wanted, I would be on easy street today.

Listen, hanging out with your friends may be a big deal in your life right now. But in five years, none of your friends will even be around. But your parents will still be there for you. They will still be hoping for the best in you, seeing the best in you and cheering you on to success.

I had a lot of friends in high school. Many times we came to my house for lunch, and my mother fixed us sandwiches. They have all but forgotten me now. But my mother is still with me today. She is active in my ministry, teaching, writing, giving money and doing whatever she can to promote the Body of Christ. She is the one person I would never want to hurt, but as a teen I caused her a lot of pain. I failed to honor her.

Given the fact that your parents are your biggest assets, you really should consider giving them the honor and respect they deserve. Think about how long you have been dependent on them. They can't just disregard all they have invested in you. That would be a dishonor to you.
