Who Let The Puppy Out
He is talented and rich, and he has a good head on his shoulders. Well, actually his head is in the clouds somewhere. Lil Bow Wow (Jermaine Dupri) apparently has plenty to brag about. He has been singing since he was six years old, and he is backed by some of the biggest names in the industry. His latest project, entitled "So So Def", was a million seller and peaked at number 2 on the R&B charts. Being a young black male, Lil Bow Wow has the opportunity to really make an impact on his generation. Perhaps he addresses the drop out rate of high school teens or the impact of drugs and crime on mortality. Or he could encourage accountability and responsibility, or just mention how to show a little respect. So what does Lil Bow Wow talk about in his music? Mainly himself. In fact, on most of this sophomore project, Lil puppy shows a passion for self-praise. He calls himself "the phenomenon", and he thinks that wealth and fame makes him better than everybody else. "Lil Bow Wow be the golden child... You the apartment below, I’m the penthouse above" (Get Up). He also boasts of having girls under his spell. Proverbs 27:2 says, "Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth..." Jesus also said that a man’s life does not consist of the abundance of things that he possess (see Luke 12:15). Unfortunately, a life built on the sands of popularity, fame and money may not stand in the day of adversity. I am happy to see any person succeed; especially someone young and gifted. I must admit though, it takes a special person to balance it all together. On the song entitled, Off the Glass", the young rapper says, "I been in the game since the age of six; so by the time I’m twenty, I’ma be ridiculous." Well, if being ridiculous is the goal, this young rapper is ahead of the game. By: Edmund Brown |
