Jessica SimpsonHip Hop Online called her "bright, beautiful and blessed". The same article states that she "possesses a voice that is capable of expressing the heartache of first love and the wondrous possibility of an everlasting tomorrow." She is Jessica Simpson, and when she burst onto the music scene with her debut album entitled "Sweet Kisses", she brought a satisfying and appealing energy to the pop music scene. Her live concerts presented a young yet seasoned professional who was honest, focused, positive, and true to herself, her beliefs and her heart. The daughter of a Baptist young minister, Simpson sung about love and life, and quickly became the poster girl for abstinence and commitment. When commenting on the song "Heart of Innocence", a song she dedicated to her future husband, she states that, "You can be confident and at ease with your sexuality and your womanliness without having sex. I am." Undeniably, Simpson has something to share to the youth of our society. But somewhere along the way, Simpson shed her image of innocence, and is not sending mixed messages to her fans. Bare midriffs. Shorty shorts. Tight, low cut see through blouses. "I will wear sexy clothes", says Simpson. "I’m not ashamed of my body, and I’m not afraid to show it." And show it she does. "I just turned twenty", Simpson continues. "And I want to show my body; and that’s okay because God gave me my body and I worked for it...If you spend $200 on a dress, you want to look hot in it. And I definitely want to turn heads." Is that all singing is about, turning heads? If sexual purity were really a virtue in Simpson’s eyes, she would be more concerned about the purity of others than showing her "hot" body. You see, Simpson’s singing career has elevated her to a platform where she has many young fans (customers). On one hand there are young boys who stumble over her immodest dress. On the other hand there are young girls who admire and respect her stand for abstinence, yet become uncomfortable with the message they send when they follow her example of dress. The bible is clear when it instructs women to dress "modestly with decency and propriety" see 1 Timothy 2:9. Romans 14 warn God’s people to avoid making choices that cause other people to stumble. How does this apply to Simpson? Well, she says she prays regularly, thanks God in her album notes and says she sings as an act of worship. Her latest project even closes with a rendition of His Eye is on the Sparrow. Yet she admits in Teen Style magazine to "mooning people" from her tour bus. Her new songs are more suggestive, and it looks like the pop princess has let go of her self-control. Of course, Simpson says she is still waiting for marriage. A lot of fans are waiting too. They are waiting for her pledge of sexual purity to agree with her commitment to modesty. Unfortunately, that may be a long time coming. |
