Listen To The Alarms

Alarms can be annoying, especially morning alarms. But if you think about it, they are put in place to help us. The clock alarm helps us get going in the morning so that we won't be late for school or work. In the event of an emergency, a smoke, fire or burglar alarm can save our life. Therefore, alarms are good and we should pay attention to them.

God has put an alarm on the inside of us. That alarm is the Holy Spirit. When we go too far in the wrong direction, that alarm goes off. He is warning us that we are headed for trouble and we need to stop.

The bible warns us in 1 Thessalonians 5:19 that we should not quench the spirit. In other words, when we feels something on the inside telling us that we are headed for trouble, we should not ignore it. That's God on the inside of us sounding off an alarm. He is letting us know that danger is ahead, and if we don't stop we might get hurt.

The Holy Spirit speaks to our heart, mind and conscience all day long. He never stops speaking to us. He not only warns us of danger, but He tells us the right ways to go. If we stop and listen, we can feel Him speaking. He lets us know how He feels about what are talking about, listening to, looking at and thinking about. God wants us to examine why we are doing what we are doing. That way we can establish what things are most meaningful to us.

When we start going down the wrong path, the Spirit starts bothering us. We feel so bad. That's an alarm. It's not always super loud, but we hear it and we know what it means. No matter how harmless we think it is, if we get an alarm, we need to stop. If we don't stop, we may get into something that we cannot get out of.

Once we ignore an alarm, it gets easier and easier to ignore them in the future. Then one day we may find ourselves doing things we never thought we would do.

Maybe God's alarm has been going off in you lately. Maybe God is telling you to stop living a lie. Perhaps you feel uneasy about something you watched on television or saw in a magazine. Maybe you are flirting with a wrong relationship or failing to deal with your anger and selfishness.

Don't quench the spirit. Listen to God's alarm when it goes off in you. He knows the trouble you are headed for, so back away from the danger zone.
