Ducks,
Rabbits, Squirrels, Eagles and Christians
A duck is a duck, a rabbit is a rabbit, a squirrel is a
squirrel, and an eagle is an eagle. That's the way God made them, and
that's the way they are. God had a special purpose for each of them,
and He equipped them to fulfill that purpose. He also gave them
certain abilities to help them survive.
A duck has feet like paddles. When he gets in the water, he swims
along effortlessly. But when he gets on land, he walks awkwardly. When
it comes to running or climbing, you can just about forget it.
The rabbit can run very fast and turn on a dime. It can hide in a
thick thorn bush without ever getting stuck. Yet, I've never seen a
rabbit swim. I'm not saying that a rabbit can't swim, I've just never
seen one swim. But I've seen them run, and let me tell you, they are
swift.
The same is true of a squirrel in a tree and an eagle in the air. When
all these creatures are operating in the place God designed them to be in, their
beauty is wonderful to behold. But if you force one of them to do
something he wasn't created to do, you will put him into a situation of sure
failure. Rabbits don't swim, squirrels don't fly and ducks don't
climb trees. That is because a duck is a duck, a rabbit is a rabbit,
and so on…
The same is true of Christians. God made us all different and placed
us in the same family. He made each one of us unique, with different
abilities, talents, and forms of expression. I am an individual, and
so are you. And though we may share some of the same interest, we are
still different. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of
wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit. To
another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same
Spirit; to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another
discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the
interpretation of tongues 1 Corinthians 12: 8-10.
You see, God has saved you and has given you one or more gifts to use for His
glory. He has given you exactly what He wanted you to have. He
did not make any error in equipping you, but according to who you are as an
individual, He freely gave to you. There is nothing insignificant
about you, and when you use what He has given you, you will experience great
joy, satisfaction and comfort.
When saints operate within their ability, God promotes them, and the Body of
Christ is strengthened. When the Church comes together and operate
within their realm of ability, balance and unity result. Longstanding
chains of bondage will melt away. It will be unlike anything we have
ever seen.
But when you compare yourself to me, or I compare myself to you, or if I force
my beliefs on you, or if we make anything else besides the Word the standard,
then we can expect to receive frustration, discouragement, and eventually,
defeat.
If God made you a duck saint, then swim. But don't feel bad if you
wobble when you run. If you are an eagle saint, don't expect
squirrels to soar, or rabbits to build a nest in the cleft of a rock high up on
some mountainside.
