Childhood Ability

It is incredible that when it came to great bible truths, like faith and greatness, Jesus said to become like a child. Many of us are so busy trying to grow up so fast that we miss our childhood. We never know what it is really like to be a child.

When most people grow up, it is hard for them to recapture that childlike spirit. Can you remember when everything was interesting and fun? I can. The back yard was a great big world of wonder and excitement. We had no problem accepting the possibility of Santa Claus and tooth fairies. Now that we are older, the whole idea of Santa Claus is so silly until you wonder how you ever believed it the first place. Well, the reason is because we had the ability of a child.

Life was like a game. We never knew what it was like to worry and fear. We never felt inferior, or ugly or dumb. It never occurred to you that you were skinny or fat or had freckles, and you certainly didn’t notice the flaws in other. We were the center of everything, no competition at all. And when we got in daddy’s arms, we felt safe, protected and welcomed.

But life has a way of changing the rules. It is like progressing to the next level of a video game; there are more traps and better-armed villains. In order to win, we need more skill. Mistakes are more costly. As we grow and learn and experience hurt and frustration, all of a sudden, we lose our childhood ability to believe and trust. We discover that a lot of people are selfish liars, and rare are the people who value what we care about.

I cannot give you a map showing you where to find child-like ability, but I can tell you that the Bible points the way. And if we decide to reclaim it, Jesus is the One who will guide us. The child is the one who trusts. The child is the one who does not feel bad about not having all the answers. The child is the one who will believe "all" of the Word, no matter how unbelievable it sounds.

If life has been giving you a hard time, why not discover the child in you. Make Jesus Christ the Lord of your life. He makes children dream the impossible.
